Introducing the ARES In Home Sleep test device for diagnosing Obstructive Sleep Apnea

ARES deviceDr. Joseph Hickey, Board Certified Internal Medicine, of Hilton Head Island, SC is now offering patients the ARES, the first FDA-cleared wireless ambulatory sleep test device for diagnosing Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) while sleeping in your own bed. Dr. Hickey is one of the first physicians in the area to offer ARES to patients.

ARES is worn on the forehead, and is usually worn for one night, but can acquire and store up to three nights of nocturnal data. The small size allows the device to be comfortably worn in all sleep positions. ARES provides a better profile of the patient’s breathing during sleep in their normal sleeping environment. The device collects physiological data while the patient is asleep and integrates the data with clinical history and physical data to determine presence and severity of OSA. The sleep study data is sent to board-certified sleep professionals who interpret the study and recommend therapy and follow-up.

ARES improves diagnostic speed and accuracy and increases patient comfort. It also creates an effective, low-cost alternative to the current sleep-testing solutions available.

In March 2008, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a National Coverage Determination (NCD) indicating coverage for Continuous Positive Sleep Apnea (CPAP) therapy for OSA as diagnosed by a Home Sleep Test. In March, 2009, the CMS further clarified their position by indicating that CMS had found evidence is sufficient to determine that the results of a TYPE II Sleep test (ARES qualifies) device is covered when used to aid the diagnosis of OSA .
